Made by hand, heart and mind.
Joe Church is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago, IL. He studied studio fine arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Since then, he has kept learning and building his skillsets through workshops, continuing education courses and self driven independent research.
Joe’s work is project based and shifts between painting, ceramics and woodworking. Chosen medium drives the project and is most often dictated by opportunity, equipment access and availability. Joe is driven to develop a unique blend of art, design and craft in the pursuit of creating meaningful work. “I feel most successful when I make something that I couldn’t have made a year ago, or even yesterday. One project always leads to the next.”
Adjacent to his artistic practice, Joe works as an art museum preparator. He was first introduced to this line of work by initiating a coop through SAIC with the Rockford Art Museum. He went on to work for a number of institutions including the Racine Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago. “Working with and around artwork, artists and art minded people has proven to be an invaluable experience. It has helped me learn my aesthetic preferences, build my visual vocabulary and continues to shape and inspire my own work.”
